My mother was an Eagan. Some of us cousins are planning a trip to Ireland next June(2009) and I am disappointed that the castle is not open until July. Any chance that a tour could possibly be done any earlier? Just thought I'd ask. It is something I think we'd all enjoy.

Hi Just wanted to say that women were not totally excluded from inheritance under Brehon law. The early Irish law tracts address the question of a female heir. The Gaelic Irish law relating to women and property was that a woman could only inherit from her father if there were no male heirs and in that case she could hold only a life-interest in land belonging to her own family or land settled on her by her husband. She had an obligation to provide military service from all the land she inherited or she could hold half the land without an obligation to provide military service. She was known as a banchomarba, a female heir. However she could not alienate such holdings without the permission of the head of the family and she could not normally transmit it to her heirs but this may have been somewhat eroded by the later middle ages. If there were male heirs then she was entitled either only to lanna, ranna and bregdha or to a share of the movables but not of the paternal land. As regarding inheritance from her mother, a daughter could inherit a life-interest of hereditary land from her mother, if there were no sons to succeed. This would then revert to her mother’s family after her death. A woman could also inherit a separate type of land holding namely ‘land of hand and thigh’. This was land granted to a daughter by her father, which could then be inherited by her lawful heirs. If her heirs were daughters and not sons, then they could inherit if they undertook to provide military service in time of war, or in half the land without such an undertaking. The daughters could inherit all of such land for the usual limited life-interest, but if a woman’s sons were her heirs, then they had to share her inheritance with members of her own family (fine). Thus, as Myles Dillon has pointed out, daughters inherited more easily from their mother than their father. Gaelic women were though excluded from the schools of learning and so were not offically allowed to become lawyers, historians etc. Thanks

I am the granddaughter of Michael Kennedy who I believe sold Redwood Castle to the Egan family and I am a direct descendent of the O'Kennedys. My aunt currently lives in the family farmhouse next to the castle and I spent much time there as a young girl when I used to run around the Castle ruins before it was bought and restored. Any facts about the history of the castle would be much appreciated.
